STORIES

A Mr. Gaylord lived between Terra Ceia Rd & Broad creek, reputed to be wealthy, a slave owner, & lawyer. Had reputation of being cruel to slaves.(reputed to have buried with only head above ground while alive as punishment. And let hogs root around them. Died in 1900 teens in summer. Blood stains were found in house. But body was badly decomposed.

*ROSCOE RADCLIFF SHOT BESIDE PANTEGO CREEK

*Bob Jones missing and body found in pantego creek. Supposed to be strange head wounds.

*several years later Mrs. Bob Jones(Zula) was found bludgeoned to death as sat at sewing machine. House ransacked. Unknown amount of money stolen. Crime unsolved (pahm has items of Jones and possible chair which she sat AS KILLED.

*Joe cordon body discovered in pantego creek , again with mysterious head wounds. Unsolved.

*about 1961, skeleton remains found in topping’s woods. Killer brought BODY from Rocky mount to dump body ;charged with crime and killed self in jail.

*Pantego did have 2 banks once. Southern & Wachovia.

* Southern bank was robbed with a Mrs. CutRELL KILLED. Killers caught & convicted.

(remember this day well, never thought was that much law in area. Steady stream of light flashing and sirens going. One nc patrolman turned totally around in road at corner of 264 &99. Killer/robbers reputed caught at Wilkinson bridge in hyde county. Killers are currently up for parole.

*Southern bank was robbed again, involved a kidnapping. It was all strange how crooks got to pantego. Details . Wilson men in prison with Belhaven man & got details of bank. Kidnapped teller & children. Believe caught.

*country stores were victims of late night break-ins. 1950s saw “rash” of these robberies. Least 3 smaller stores, had almost everything stolen during the night.

*John ratcliff store was broken in two times. Know personally about these. First break-in was on sat. night and day of big ruritan club BBQ. Store funds and ruritan club fund were put in big safe (C.P. Aycock) robber took off 500 lb doors….safe had tear gas. Course, stole all moneys; & stole GUNS FOR SALE. But they left their shotgun….but were ready for action…..loaded gun had open box of shells beside. Persons never caught. But there was a suspect. Funny this person came into store 4 days earlier; same person was suspect in other store clean-outs.

Other time robbed was in 60s. Came in from roof sky light. Supposed to be father and 2 sons. Child was supposed to be lowered by rope. Not much stolen.

*PHS OFFICE SAFE WAS STOLEN. Mr. windley opened office & discovered no safe. Just kept money from selling pencils & paper there. Built up amount but was less that $200. Supposed to have rolled out safe through auditorium, down elementary hall & away. Crooks never caught. Some say safe was found in creek; others say safe was found on Beech ridge Rd.

* Were 3 “ HOUSES OF ILL REPUTE” FROM EARLY 1900S TO 1940s. All located within 2 miles OF academy.

“the house which I live was one; elderly said; she wanted to take the children to raise; because mother did not mend their stocking & she saw men.”

another was located just beside Cuckolds creek bridge. “little casino has more than whiskey & beer to sell.

“Coconuts” on 264 west of Pantego had week end ladies(none local). BOY living close by as small child went by to get a soft drink. Mother wore their bottom out when they got home.

No names given to respect families privacy.

And you thought crime was only in big towns.

Minor crime but funny: pHs man stole Washington’s chief of Police hub caps. Then tried

to sell back to the chief.

“WENT TO STORE ON SAT NIGHT ABOUT 10 ON WAY OUT OF TOWN; SOMEONE TRYING TO COME IN BACK DOOR. GOT BRAVE & GOT SHOTGUN & WENT TO INVESTIGATE. Caught them, recognized; & told to run away. Then shot over their heads! Called law; would be 2 hours getting there; so continued out of town. Boys arrested; broke in pHs agriculture shop & STOLE burglar tools. BOYS ‘ LAWYER MADE AG TEACHER TO BE A FOOL; BECAUSE COULD NOT IDENTFY A BOLT CUTTER. WERE CONVICtED. MONTHS LATER, SAME BOY BROKE IN WACHOVIA BANK, BEAT CASH DRAWER TO PIECES (COULD HAVE JUST OPENED WITH HAND); BROKE IN ELEM. SCHOOL LUNCH ROOM & STOLE LUNCH TICKETS--PASSED THE m OUT TO OTHER KIDS……..caught

Am sure were many more crimes; if you know of them--send.

1952 yearbook is needed.
